Spring Youth Programs

whitewater rafting on the James

Come join us in the trees and trails of the James River Park System!

Tree climbing, mountain biking, and more... We're now offering outdoor adventure programs for the spring! Are your kids looking for something to do out of the house? Sign them up for one of our spring youth programs! We have offerings for ages 6-12, and all programs run once per week from 4:30-6:30PM for 6 weeks.

COVID-19 Policy: All programs will be outdoors the whole time. We will perform touchless temperature checks on all staff and participants, and cloth face coverings/masks will be required. Everyone will wash hands with soap and water at the beginning of the program as well as before and after eating and using the restroom. Hand sanitizer will be used frequently, including before and after using any shared equipment (like our climbing elements).

Inclement Weather: If we need to cancel a day due to weather, we will notify parents by 11:00am day-of and will schedule a makeup day (usually extending the program by 1 week).

Mountain Biking - ages 7-12

Open to all kids ages 7-12!
2-hr program, once a week for 6 weeks
Drop off and pick up is in Forest Hill Park
Cost is $175

Designed by Riverside Cycling co-owner, Max Pendergraph, and led by our professional mountain bike guides. Participants will be taught the skills to safely ride real mountain bike singletrack. Examples of skills include effective gear changing and braking techniques, proper posture on the bicycle, trail etiquette, and tackling obstacles on the trail. Children should already be reasonably confident and comfortable riding a bike on paved surfaces and must have their own mountain bike (in good condition) and helmet to bring to the program. In order to get the most from our Mt Biking programs, we require the following:

Bikes:
- gears (no single speed / bmx bikes)
- knobby mountain bike tires (no slick tires).

Additionally, it is the responsibility of the parent(s)/guardian(s) to make sure the bike is tuned up and in good working condition, including:

- proper inflation pressure in the tires
- a clean and well-lubricated drivetrain
- fully functional front and rear brakes with plenty of brake pad material
- The shifting should be properly adjusted, meaning the shifter should be able to move the derailleur across the full range of cogs on the rear cassette / freewheel without skipping or jumping.
- Wheels should be trued with no wobbles or broken spokes.

Helmets:
- should be a CPSC certified bike specific helmet and not intended for any other sport, the material should not be overly brittle and the pads should not show excessive wear
- should fit snugly but not cut off circulation, both on the head and the chin strap
- chin strap must be buckled while riding.

When in doubt, bring it to Riverside Cycling for a safety check or a tune up!
